Fall Décor for Your Wellbeing

There’s no debate that our home environments, and the décor within them, affect our wellbeing and health. The colours we use, the images we surround ourselves with, the texture we feel, and scents we smell — whether you’re aware of it our not, they are sending us messages every time we walk in the front door.

Fall décor, like any seasonal décor, is only one layer of our decorations and is only with us for a short time. But it can give us an opportunity to support ourselves through the shifting season. Like anything, there’s always two ways it can go: a positive, supportive direction; or a negative, draining direction.

If decorating your whole house for every season and occasion feels heavy and overwhelming, then don’t do it. Even just a few small touches to one area of your home can be powerful. Or, if you are like me, I go all out for some seasons and occasions and very little to nothing for others. Do what works for you and what feels good and never worry about what everyone else is doing.

Here are a few ways you can use fall décor to support your wellbeing and refresh your home for the season.

Uplift

Seasonal décor can refresh the home’s energy, making it feel new, inspiring, and re-energized. This new energy can add some optimism and happiness to the new season. Fall décor has this cozy, comforting feeling.

Vibrant colours, fuzzy blankets, textured plush pillows, and warm scented candles can uplift the spirit. This can feel especially good if you’re like me and hate to see the summer come to an end.

Refresh

I often find once you have your home décor the way you like it can stay the same, sometimes for years. The seasonal change is an opportunity to refresh, rethink our décor and change it up — even if it’s just for a couple of months (or weeks).

Have some fun with it, move some things around, add some fall touches to what’s there. Make it a family affair, plan a hike or trip to a local fall farm and gather some natural elements to bring those beautiful, crisp colours indoors.

Cycle with the Season

We all need a connection to nature and the Earth; our overall wellbeing depends on it. Oftentimes in our modern lifestyle we lose that connection and just keep going, not even being aware of the world around us. Being part of the cycle and flowing with it brings us balance.

The falling leaves, changing colours, and shifts in the air remind us to also let go, to shift, change, and evolve, as we move from summer’s fiery, extroverted energy to a more intimate, inward movement. It really is a time to slow down, gather and connect.

As a busy mother of three, I need to be reminded of this often. Bringing these fall decorations into the home is a great reminder to stop once in awhile during your busy day and slow down.
