Holly Red and Evergreen

The holidays are upon us, and everyone is busy transforming their homes with holiday decorations. How can we bring more awareness to our holiday decorating to better create and harmonious home for our family is holiday?

In Feng Shui and psychology, colours symbolize and bring out different energies and emotions in us. So I want to start by asking you: What do you want your home to convey this holiday?

Now use that answer to carefully select which colours will best serve the energy and feelings you wish to create for your family and friends this holiday season.

Traditionally, people migrate towards the reds and greens for the Christmas season. But do you understand how to intentionally incorporate those colours into your home, without calling forth an energy you’re not prepared for?

In other words, I’m encouraging you to be intentional with your holiday colour scheme.

Red brings the fire element, adding a sense of passion and action to your space. While green represents the wood element of growth and expansion.

Both are incredible colours to utilize around this season! And actually work in a natural balance. While red energizes and enlivens, the green can be relaxing, reminding us of our connection with nature.

Add in some calming blues, which represent water energy as do mirrors and reflective surfaces. Silver and gold bring in the metal energy for focus and clarity.

But be mindful, because with any colour palette too much can undo the good.

Too much stimulating energy can overwhelm and can create stress. Too much calm, cool energy can create sadness and stagnation.

Consider the energy you and your family will be best supported by through the holidays. Also, think of what each family member adds into the mix — different people bring in different energy as well. Think about your own family members and what their personal energy is like.

If gathering with friends and family emotionally drains you or you find it overwhelming incorporate more water and metal to create a clear and calm décor.

If your family is struggling with feelings of disconnect and you’re concerned that your holiday gathering may feel subdue or quiet, put more emphasizes into the fire elements with red décor, candles, and warm scents. If you have a fireplace, use it to add that cozy touch that will foster warm connections.

I find in most cases the most harmonious and welcoming spaces for everyone are one's balanced with a little of each element. While one might take center stage this holiday season (for me, I’m a traditionalist with the red and green), having little touches of all the elements will lead to a more nourished home this season.
