First Impressions

Your front entryway creates the first impression upon stepping into the home. It sets to tone and intention for the rest of the house.

It should welcome you in, invite you relax, start to tell the story about the family.

A Mindful Entry

Feng Shui teaches us that our entry should welcome us with love, beauty, peace, and vibrant energy. Now ask yourself: When you first step into your home, what does it say to you and about you? How does it make you feel?

Taking some time to assess your current entry and notice how it makes you feel when you enter is an easy way to kick off a shift towards a more mindfully designed home.

If it isn’t setting the right tone now, you can start brainstorming how you could change it. Your home is the one place you can control, so make sure you are creating the feelings you want as you walk through that door each day.

Design Elements

No matter if your entryway is small or large, it’s usually a small portion of the overall footprint of your house. Taking some time to create the experience here and setting the tone for the rest of the home can have a huge impact.

I recommend playing with interesting flooring, a beautiful area rug, or make a statement with a light fixture or furniture piece.

Beauty & Function

While this space needs to be beautiful, it also need to be functional. Entryways are often the place where things get dropped after coming through the door. Pay attention to what and where things get dropped off and take that into account when designing the space.

Maybe you’ll need to add hooks, baskets, or trays, along with a piece of art that makes you smile each time you enter. Or maybe there’s an amazing table you found and fits perfect into the space.

Take the experience a little further now by adding layers into the design. Details matter — bring in a plant to add life and nature into the space, look at the lighting you have, add scented candles or a diffuser filled with scents that feel welcoming and like home to you.

All these little layers, pieces and details add depth, meaning and let everyone who enters feel at home.
